In a theatre production, a prop helps the story come alive. It ignites the imagination of the viewers and helps them step into the story. A good prop also helps the actor become their character.
Most of the props I’ve made were for amateur children’s productions where they also needed to be lightweight and easy to maneuver. My starting position with an assignment is that anything is possible. I love the challenge of making a plan, within the given budget.
I find it useful to connect with the director and get their vision of the production. In that way, I can translate that vision to ensure the props support the story that is told.
